Broken into twice
Our van has been broken into twice.
The first time was one week after we got it. We were in an IKEA parking lot in Italy, and somebody broke the driver's window, unlocked the van and went through everything. Thankfully, at that point it was still empty.
The second time was just a week ago, in Puerto Madryn in Argentina. Somebody broke the passenger window and grabbed the binoculars we had, unfortunately, left on the dashboard. We were about 10 meters away with our backs to the van, and it happened just like that.
And then there's everything in between. We've been living on the road for three years, and there have been a lot of nights when we would have liked to have eyes outside. You hear a noise and wonder what's happening, but you don't really have good visibility out there.
We tried security products along the way, but they sent so many false alarms that in the end we stopped trusting them.
So I wanted every Weft Core to ship with security built in. It has a dedicated AI chip that watches the cameras and alerts you about the things that actually matter, like someone loitering around the vehicle, and not every person walking past. It works with whatever cameras the vehicle has.
Finn has PoE cameras on the outside and a fisheye camera on the inside, and they all just plug into the Core. When we lock the van and walk away, Away arms itself and starts the cameras.
At night it depends on where we're camping. When we start camping, the app asks where we are: at a campground or wild camping. At a campground there's no need for it. When we're wild camping, Night Watch turns on by itself after dark and keeps the outside cameras on. The alerts are tuned so that we don't get woken up for nothing, but at the same time we can feel secure.
That's really what I wanted: to know what's happening outside without having to get up and look, and to only hear about it when it matters. Like every Weft release, it runs in Finn first, so we'll keep tuning it as we go.
